Deep Fry vs Air Fry


Fry food is undoubtedly many people’s favorite. Who can denied a golden brown crispy crust on the outside and juicy tender on the inside. Crispy and crunchy food are addictive, sometimes we are finished 20 pieces of chicken nuggets while watching TV. Fry food have lots of variant, start from Fish and Chips, Fried Chicken, Nuggets, Onion Rings, Spring Rolls and many other mouthwatering deep fry food. Not just because it is delicious, fry food also relatively easy to make. You only have to season them first, heat up the oil and then just put them into the boiling oil. In recent years there is a traditional deep frying method, now comes the air frying method.

Deep Fry

Deep frying or commonly referred to as fried food by submerging food in hot fat or commonly we call it oil. In history, frying food is already done by the Greek people from about 5th century BCE. It appears in the Roman cookbook when they use olive oil to fry a chicken dish. The practice of it spreading to the other parts of Europe and Arabia in the following centuries. The term “deep frying” and other type of modern deep fried food were not invented until 19th century, but the practice of frying itself is already exist for millennia.

Deep fried used a deep fryer or chip pan, not the usual shallow frying pan. Most of deep fry food can be cooked simultaneously. When deep frying done properly the food will not become greasy because the moisture inside the food is repelling the oil. As long as the oil is hot enough and the food is not immersed in the hot oil for too long. But just like what you already heard of, deep fried food indeed taste good but it is not a healthy diet, first because typically deep fried food are high in calorie. And then deep fried food are high in Trans fats. Trans fats formed when the oil is heated up, trans fats is hard for our body to break down, and it can lead to many diseases including heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. And thing get worse as the more frequent the oil heated up the more Trans fats it will be formed.

Air Fry

Air fry is a new method to fry food using a tool named air fryer. The air fryer works alternatively by coating the food in a thin layer of oil, the hot air is circulating around the food at high speed, cooking the food and producing a crispy layer via Maillard effect. Maillard effect is a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars that gives browned food its distinctive flavor. When using air fryer we can reduce the usage of oil between 70% and 80% compare to the traditional deep frying. When cooking raw meat like chicken, no oil is needed because the excess oil will be cooked from the chicken as the chicken is being cooked. In the end you will also have a less fried chicken from before it was cooked in the air fryer. From the safety side air fryer is a lot safer, when in the cooking process the lid is closed and you will not have to be afraid the hot oil will get into you.

Air fryer can be a good substitute and a lot healthier option for deep frying method. Not only it will reduce the oil usage but it is also easier to use and clean up too. When cleaning a deep fryer, we have to drain the oil first and then we can clean up the container using hand. When using air fryer there is the cooking pan and the drip pan, both of them are even dishwasher safe. You can also clean it by hand. When using air fryer we can get burnt like when using fryer, the air fryer temperature and timer can be set to cook food according to your taste. It said even teenager can easily use it. Here is some fried food such as French fries, homemade potato fries, chicken breast, steak, fish, cakes / muffins, and quiche. But there is a down side with the air fryer, sadly air fryer can not produce those crispy and crunchy skins. And just because it contains less oil, it does not mean it is healthy to keep eating air fry food every day. The other one is because the size of the tool is relatively small, it will be challenging if you want to cook for a larger family. You will need to cook twice or more if you want to provide for a large family.
